Ray:

Frequently, a HG-10 will load the bias voltage on a HW-16 to the point 
where the side-tone oscillator will come on to a certain extent, which 
creates a horrible racket.  That may be what you're hearing.  The 
standard fix for that is to increase resistor R69 (on the HW) from 120K 
to 220K or so.

You might give that a try and see what happens.
