Succintly as possible, the Sandwich, Ill, hamfest on Sunday was good and
enjoyable, despite fairly low temperatures and a little dampness. This
is about a 90% tail-gater fest and was far superior to Des Moines a week
earlier, which attracted all of six tail-gaters.
Had an enjoyable chat with fellow glow-bug Bob, W9RAN and his side kick,
whose name and call escapes me at the moment.
Picked up the following: Very good HW-16 w/org. manual $35, good T-60
$30. Good AM-2 swr meter with the original-run "misprinted" meter $13,
three signal tracers w/good eye-tubes $8 total, R.S. "Globe or Space
Patrol" s.w.l. rcvr, $20 (for a friend who was looking for one), very
good HM-102 meter $15, box of misc. SB-200 parts inc. meter $5, eight
20's vintage Remler tube sockets $2. That's about it, as I recall. I
stood there and hesitated for five seconds, which was enough to watch a
beautiful Simpson 260 w/leather case get away for $5.
I didn't write down a list but I do remember seeing the following with
asking prices: fair-good Viking Ranger + small Matchbox $325 for pair,
very good Adventurer $100, good HW-101 w/r.i.t. & P.S. and lots of
accessories, $180, good HW-8 & p.s. $120, excellent HQ-110 $110, one of
those early Heathkit code oscillator in the black plastic box - vy clean
$10, good Cheyenne w/o p.s. $55, 2 of those Heath dual meter watt-swr
meters excellent $55 ea., a QF-1 very good $10, two Drake W-4
wattmeters and a WV-4 all excellent and about $95.
And I remember seeing the following without prices: immaculate
SB-300/SB401/SB-620 plus a SB-101 or 100, same guy had what I think was
a Drake TR-4C and MS-4/PS-4 in **chrome** cabinets, a rack of about
seven or eight restored S-38's, some S-118 and S-120 Halli's, a DX-60A,
a way-cool home-brew rcvr that 'RAN nabbed, an SB-200 and a SB-220, a
really ancient tube transmitter (HB) with double ended tubes about the
size of footballs and copper coils reminiscent of Snuffy Smith's still
that was gone in 60 seconds for a c-note+, a Hammarlund Four-Twenty, an
SX-101A, SB-series cw filters, lots of accessories, tons of parts, many
good high-power glowbug tubes + Ike WBØAAQ and his usual smorgasbord of
good quality military stuff. Oh and there was some solid-state stuff
there, too.
Sadly, no decent xtals - this in the hometown of James Knight!
Hopefully, W9RAN can pick it up from here and fill in all the stuff I've
forgotten, which is a considerable amount.
Respectfully submitted,
Respectful Tom
