[Heathkit] Another hethkit Mohican question

Hi,
Today I was doing a little more work on my "Nostalgia" radio, a Heathkit
Mohican. This set has been overhauled, repainted, aligned etc and is playing.
However, I noticed on the higher bands that strong stations "pull" the
frequency as they fade up and down, probably because the AGC action is causing
different Voltage drops in the circuit.
Studying the schematic, it shows that there is a 6 Volt Zener diode regulator
in the supply line to the RF amplifier, Mixer base and LO transistors. For
some reason this set DOESN"T have that Zener and that supply rail is riding at
9-10 Volts, and I suspect will change with AGC action. Eureka! It looks like
I found my problem.
But first a simple question. I'm wondering if the person who built the set
overlooked installing the diode and couldn't figure out where the "extra part"
belonged, OR if Heathkit came out with a change to the circuit, leaving it out
for some obscure reason?
Anybody know?
