Heath never actually marketed a DX-100A. Those
transmitters that had the Heath antenna loading
modification kit installed (did away with the fixed
capacitors and 50 pf variable) were known as DX-100A
transmitters. From the factory only the DX-100 and
DX-100B were sold.
Although the stock Apache modulation has a definite
"harshness" and the Apache is known as the "scratchy
Apache", if you change 3 capacitors in the lower
modulation stages to .01 mfd orange drops and unplug
the 6AL5 clipper tube, the audio becomes much more
"pleasant" to the ear. The article that was in
Electric Radio a while back can be found on either of
my websites the URL of which are listed at the end of
this message.
I have both the DX-100 (actually an "A" model) and an
Apache. Both transmitters work quite well on AM.
Also have a Globe Champion 350A for AM as well.

If you want 'older' tube transmitter: DX-100 ! I
think there was a straight 100, an 'A' and a 'B'.
If you want 'newer' tube transmitter: Apache !
Both have built in VFO, I've been told both are great transmitters.
