[Heathkit] Grid meter position on AT-1?

Has anyone really used the grid meter position on the
AT-1? I was wondering if this function could be simply
bypassed and just the plate current left alone. I'm
thinking about making an "improved performance" AT-1
based on a junker unit I have with a bunch of holes
punched in the chassis and the panel. Thanks. Cal.
