Before I made the mod with the added capacitor, I did find the
chirp to be less with the HG-10...PROVIDED... the HG-10's
oscillator tube (6CH8) was good. I had to go through 5 or so
oscillator tubes to get one that wouldn't chirp all by itself (i.e.
with no HW-16 attached), and some were FAR worse than
others.
I also use a slightly modified and rebuilt VF-1 with my HW-16
and it sounds excellent. The same thing held true concerning
the oscillator tube (6AU6) for the VF-1 also. I had to hand-select
one that keys with no chirp.
I don't know what the mechanism is inside the tube that
controls this, but it certainly IS tube specific.
