[Heathkit] SB-301 scratchy tuning

I'm in the process of restoring a SB-301 I got at a hamfest.  The receiver
works OK after replacing the 6AS11, but there are several spots on the dial
where a scratchy noise (like a dirty potentiometer makes) occurs and the
tuning is unsteady in CW/SSB modes.  I assume it's due to dust in the LMO,
but I'm reluctant to break the seals on the LMO.  Any advice is appreciated,
and if this has been covered in a FAQ somewhere, can someone point me to it?
