[Heathkit] E-mail Tax???

Although until now this has not been possible,
according to various news reports and interviews with
several Congressmen and Senators the protection
against Internet taxes expires at midnight Eastern
time tomorrow.
Also according to at least one Congressman who's
interview I did hear, there are over 700 taxing
authorities in the United States that are wanting to
tax the Internet. What they will tax is the
providers, etc., where E-Mail is concerned. It was
pointed out that even if the message starts and ends
in different states, that any state in which the
servers, routers, etc., are in could tax the company
that is located in their state. They used the example
of Texas where a lot of these "colo" operations are.
Even if the message did not start or end in Texas,
then the State of Texas could still tax the company
that owns the server, etc.
Almost every state that has a sales tax is wanting to
get the sales tax on items sold to persons residing in
their state. So far, this has not been possible.
But, unless the ban on such taxes is extended,
starting on Saturday 1 November 2003 states can start
taxing such sales.
I wish that this time it was still a hoax. But,
unless Congress does something about the law then
taxes are going to start adding up. As I said before,
they won't be levied on individuals, but will be
levied on the companies that provide Internet service.
Those companies will then have to raise prices etc.
It was also pointed out that the fact that taxing
authorities that are located in states other than the
company providing the service will be able to tax
them, that it will be a nightmare in just making all
the reports, payments, etc., that will be necessary.
Can you imagine having to deal with more that 700
different taxing authorities under the "worst case"
scenerio!

This has been talked about for how long now, it would
next to impossible to even attempt something like
this, I'm not sweating it...Just my opinion.
