The only receiver that I can think of that was built
by Heathkit is the AR-3. However, the speaker is in
the left side of the wooden cabinet instead of the
top. It is gray in color, has a slide-rule dial, has
a bandspread, antenna tune control, and has cloth over
a wooden box for the cabinet.
The back was open and there never was a back panel.

I remember that it was gray, had a built in speaker
that faced upwards (I think), had a slide rule style
dial, main tune and bandspread, antenna trimmer and
more. It seems to me that the texture of the rx was
somehow unusual, perhaps a material over the cabinet.
For some reason, I think it was a wood instead of
metal cabinet. I may be totally wrong here! The back
was open above the chassis and the tubes were visible.
I can not say if there ever was a back panel that
completely covered the rear or not, but there was not
when I got the rx.
