Hello,
I have used an AT-1 transmitter on AM with plate modulation.
Click below for a picture of the set-up.
AT-1 modulator ==> http://www.hvinet.com/rjmattson/at1
This modulator was built from a construction article "Modulator for the
Novice Transmitter" CQ Nov. 1955. The modulator described is specifically
designed for plate modulating the Heathkit AT-1 transmitter.
Another plate modulator for the AT-1 was described in Pop Electronics Aug.
1957 but I have not built that one.
I have recently used the AM modulated AT-1 on 3885 kHz with good reports.

It has been done. I recall talking to a ham who was using a modulated
AT-1 back in the 50s. I don't recall whether he was using plate or
screen modulation.
I was using cathode modulation on a 6L6 final.
