Bill, as Glen pointed out some of these did indeed come with chromed 
knobs.  For the earlier ones with unplated knobs I can suggest that an 
excellent metal polish to try would be Simichrome, made in Germany by 
Happich.  Despite any inference of the name it's not just for chrome and 
does a fine job on aluminum, especially castings.  This is one of those 
products that's like money - you can use it everywhere.

The easiest place to find it should be any decent motorcycle shop.
