HI, I will refer you to the manual as the diode probe has special cable.
the cable quite often breaks at the bottom 
connector. you must trim the cable back about 2 inches from the clamps on
the connector. Since the probe cable has both input dc signal from the
probe diode as well as the heater voltage for the probe and the  an
overall shield for this, the cable is critical. It sounds as if the
overall shield is opening up. Repair should clear this problem up.  Don't
forget to set the heater voltage or curent after this repair.
This meter is one of the best still around, much better than its
successors.  Good to over 700 mcs  (mhz)
