I'd leave the 1n34's in instead. There has been
documentation that hot carrier diodes are an
improvement in distortion down around the
100-200 Hz range but hardly worth the effort
in a SSB rig with a 2.1 Khz filter. 1N914's turn
on at a higher lever than the germaniums and
the BFO injection is already marginal on most Heath
rigs. If you really want to try an improvement in
this area I'd buy a pile of 1N34(A)'s and select a
matched set of four, install them and maybe you'll see an
improvement in minimum carrier null, but even that is more
work than its worth for another 5-10 db carrier suppression.
I'm talking about the balanced modulator diodes now, the
product detector in the HW/SB transceivers is a
vacuum tube.
