[Heathkit] Heath Dip Meter

I have had a HD-1250 Solid State Dip Meter for some time, but never used it
a lot. One of those hamfests finds that I'm sure we all have. I dug it out
the other day to try and determine the inductance of a coil, and remembered
why I did not use it that much in the past. I had some difficulty in
reading the 'null' from the setup. I remember that was my disappointment in
the past with this meter. The null never did really stand out as I swept
across the frequency range.
Does/did anyone have one of these dip meters and what was your experience
with it? I put a new battery in it so that wasn't the problem; I can set
the sensitivity to give me full scale (plus with the new battery); and I
knew about what the inductance was so was able to search for a dip around
where it should be. It would only dip down maybe 2 units on the scale at
best, more like 1.5 units. Should I have gotten more of a pronounced 'dip'
in the meter? Does anyone know if there were Heath Mods to this kit to
increase the sensitivity in any way?
Maybe this is just what it does. I have nothing to compare it to, so
thought I would pose the question here to see if others had similar
experiences.
Thanks in advance,
Dennis, NU8S
