A Winter Storm is expected to bring significant snow to most of Southern
New England Friday Morning through Saturday Morning. A Winter Storm
Warning is in effect from 6 AM Friday to 7 AM Saturday for Southern New
Hampshire, Northern Connecticut, North-Central Rhode Island and all of
Massachusetts away from the South Coast and Cape Cod. In the Winter Storm
Warning area, 5-8 of snow is expected in Southern New Hampshire with
6-10 along and north of the Mass. Pike to the Vermont/New Hampshire
border. In the area along and north of the Mass. Pike, the precipitation
will remain predominately snow with some sleet mix near the Mass. Pike.
In areas along and south of the Mass. Pike, 4-8 of snow is expected in
the Winter Storm Warning area with more of a sleet/freezing rain mix
Friday Evening in that part of the warning area.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 AM Friday to 7 AM Saturday
for South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island and Cape Cod. In this
area, 3-6 of snow is expected with a mix/change over to sleet and
freezing rain and even a changeover to rain in the advisory area. Across
Nantucket, Block Island and Marthas Vineyard, 1-3 of snow is expected
before a changeover to sleet/freezing rain and then rain. No advisories
are in effect for the islands at this time.
Two things that will need to be monitored for this event is the track of
the storm. A track somewhat further away from the coast could result in
heavier snowfall accumulations down through the coastal areas. At this
time, models do not indicate the storm getting closer to the region
allowing for more mixed precipitation across the area but this will be
watched. The second item to be monitored is that some models bring even
heavier precipitation to the region. If that were to occur, heavier snow
and ice totals would be possible. These trends will be monitored as we
get into the storm event Friday.
Some form of SKYWARN Activation is likely particularly as we get into
Friday Afternoon and Friday Night. Further details on the activation
status will be posted in the Friday Morning coordination message. Below
is the Winter Storm Warning/Winter Weather Advisory statement and
Hazardous Weather Outlook from NWS Taunton:
