Hey gang,
Field Day is four weeks away - is everybody ready!
There have been a few inquiries about the logging program we will be using
this year. The answer is:
The same one as last year, N3FJP's Field Day Log. The reason for choosing
Scott's program is the ease of use and the simplicity of the GUI (user
interface). In short the program does everything needed for Field Day
logging, is easy to learn and secure. It is almost impossible to lose any
logged contacts.
If anyone would like to try out the program prior the 'big weekend' you can
download a copy from the N3FJP web site. Go to http://www.n3fjp.com to
download. Select "Field Day Logs" under "Contests" on the left hand side,
then download the latest version, 2.8 on the top of the page that opens.
This will give you a demo package that is fully functional but only allows
30 contacts in the log. Since you are learning, not logging, this is fine.
When you fill the log and want to practice some more just start over again!
I'm sure there will be a newer version out just prior to Field Day. I doubt
it will be significantly different to the user, it will just be updated to
fit with the rules changes for 2007.
For those Band Captains that want to install a fully functional version on
their logging computer please email me and I'll send you the activation
password for the program. I don't think it is fair to N3FJP to post that
info on the web.
I realize there are more powerful contest loggers out there but this meets
all our needs and has performed well for the last three years. Maybe next
year we will take a stab at a 'networked' installation? Any system managers
out there up to the task? The biggest hurdle is interconnecting the
stations. Wire is a pain and the station spacing is tough for wireless.
Anyway, download the program and give it a test run. Nothing like being
prepared when FD rolls around next month.
