Hi everyone,
Just a short note about a few things coming down the road at HCRA. But
before that, I regret to inform everyone of yet another silent key among our
ranks. Ray, N1RLX passed away quietly this past weekend. I'm sure we all
remember Ray not only for hosting the MTARA information net over the last
few years but for his dedication to public service in the Pioneer Valley.
For many years Ray has quietly and tirelessly organized public service
events for MTARA as that club's Emergency Coordinator. He will be missed by
all.
Thanksgiving is just around the corner but don't eat too much! The HCRA
Holiday party follows shortly on the turkey day's heels and will be better
than ever this year. Food will again be catered by Pajer's market in
Agawam - plus desserts from Pajer's and our members. Marty and Andy are
working hard to coordinate everything so we can eat heartily. New this year
will be a fun game, "Ham Jeopardy". John, Kx1x has created an authentic
Jeopardy game that will allow up to nine people to compete. Questions are
being created right now for lots of ham subjects. And you know what? The
lucky winner will go home with a Yaesu VX-150R HT for demonstrating
outstanding amateur radio knowledge. In addition to the Jeopardy prize there
will be lots of door prizes for many of our guests. All HCRA members are
invited to the party on December 3rd. The party is free for all HCRA members
and a guest. It's HCRA's way of saying thank you for your support throughout
the year.
I just got word today that Larry, WB1DBY has confirmed the last opening in
our presentation list for 2005. February will see Steve McGee, WA1PDF on tap
from QRP Labs in CT. Steve will be talking about the art of QRP, the fun of
small kit building and will even bring along a few of his kits. This is a
great time to learn about QRP and maybe even go home with a QRP kit to build
during the winter doldrums. Mark you calendar now for February 5th - you
won't want to miss this one. And thanks to Larry for putting together a
great slate of speakers for the entire year.
The ARRL 10 meter contest starts right after the holiday party. HCRA has
consistently placed well in this contest over the last few years. This is
one of those neat contests that allows you to compete on your own but still
turn your score in for the club. The best of both worlds. See how we did in
previous years by clicking on: http://www.hcra.org/arrl_10m_2003.htm. It's
fun and even with the downturn in sunspots you can't discount the fact there
might be an opening. Just a few weeks ago 10M was open world wide for many
consecutive days. I hope to hear you on during this year's 'test!
I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and look forward to seeing you at the
Holiday Party,
'73....
Jim, KK1W
