[HCRA] HF antenna

Hi again, Erik

Once again, Steve and I are on the same wavelength. Beyond that, I'm
pretty suspicious of any antenna that small that can claim 200 kHz of
usable bandwidth on 40 meters at a given tuning. That suggests a lossy
antenna system. My "no radials" Cushcraft R-7000 won't do that on 40,
and it's more than twice as tall. (It's also sitting in my garage if
anyone's looking for a multiband vertical; I don't plan to put it up
here.)

If you have a couple of supports, a dipole is simple and cheap and can
be made multiband (It's what I'm using). If you've got a single
reasonably high support, an inverted V might be the way to go.

Hi Erik,

Have never used that antenna.

However based on the on-line manual, it appears to require
reconfiguration
for every band you wish to operate.
This is fine for portable/backpacking use and such.

I presume you'd rather not have to go outside in "110 degree heat" or
"1+
inch/hour rainfall" or "3' of snow" or during a blizzard to take the
antenna down and reconfigure it for a new band every time you want to
change bands.

A more convenient choice would be an all-band vertical such as a
Butternut
HF-6V (80-10+30M) or HF-9V (80-16M including WARC bands) or alternately
using a High Sierra (or similar) "Screwdriver antenna in a "fixed"
mounting.

Something like the Butternut (alternately some CushCraft, Hy-Gain or
Hustler models) can be obtained used for less than the approx $200 cost
of
the Ventena HFp.
