Melbourne's (Australia) weekly amateur radio news service
APC News
Wednesday, February 5, 2003. Edition No. 180
HIGH PRAISE FOR VK3 OPERATORS
"VALUED, appreciated, a Godsend and, extremely professional. It's
amazing
to think that you work at this level of proficiency, and do it
voluntarily"
THOSE were the words from incident control and operations officers at
Mount
Beauty speaking about the efforts of radio amateurs who are now assisting
with bushfire communications in North East Victoria.
APPROXIMATELY 50 amateurs are currently assisting fire communications at
incident control centres in Ovens, Corryong, Mount Beauty and airstrips
in
the area.
VOLUNTEER amateurs, who normally operate for five day periods, have
proved
their worth operating trunking radios under the auspices of the
Department
of Sustainability and Environment.
THE Wireless Institute Civil Emergency Network was activated when the
emergency started. WICEN's Carol Tremellen told APC News that they will
probably remain activated for at least two weeks, or at least until the
bushfire threat has passed. This means that volunteers are still needed
to
relieve current operators.
CAROL said that volunteers need to have good hearing and be able to cope
with the environment of a busy operations centre. Proficient radio
procedure,
perhaps gained through DXing, contesting or general operating, was
important.
Additionally, intending volunteers need to commit five or six days of
their
time to the assignment.
PARTICIPANTS are provided with food and accommodation, but should bring
sufficient clothes and toiletries to last a week. As you will be
operating
trunking radios, you need not bring your own equipment.
WICEN membership is NOT a requirement any amateur with the requisite
skills and able to make the commitment is invited to volunteer.
THOUGH it's hard work, those who have come back from the emergency area
have praised the co-operation and the camaraderie between those present.
THERE are also the benefits for amateur radio, after all, Cyclone Tracy
was
nearly 30 years ago, and we need to defend our existence on the basis of
what we are doing now, rather than recite past glories.
SO, if you're interested in lending a hand, please contact Carol
Tremellen
on (03) 5962 6098 or email [email protected]
WICEN TO SUPPORT SKI RACE
THOUGH still activated for the bushfires, WICEN will also be involved in
communication for this weekend's annual "SOUTHERN 80" Murray River Ski
Race.
THE race is conducted on the Murray River between Torrumbarry Weir and
Echuca, a distance of 80 Kms. Amateurs provide communication from both
land
and boat-based stations.
THIS is not just for the running of the event, but also provides an
important safety service.
TIME to volunteer is very short, as you are required to be at Echuca by
Friday evening. There are also early starts on Saturday and Sunday.
UNLIKE the WICEN bushfire communications mentioned earlier, you will
need
to be almost self-sufficient, bringing a sleeping bag, pillow, tent, food
etc.
IF you're boat-based, you will need a 2m. mobile transceiver of at least
10
watts, a Slim Jim or similar portable antenna and, backup batteries.
There
may be one or two places left, so if you're interested, register straight
away as time is short.
AGAIN, intending volunteers should phone Carol Tremellen, whose number
we
gave earlier in the bulletin.

SHUTTLE RECOVERY ACTIVITY
YOU can monitor some of the shuttle recovery activity by listening to
the Nacogdoches W5NAC repeater on Echolink (146.66, I believe).
THE group is using the "WX_TALK" conference, but they request that
monitoring stations do NOT connect to that conference. Instead, connect
to
the "EDU_NET" conference, set up for listening only. I believe the N2LEN
repeater conference is also set up for monitoring.
TONIGHT I've heard that Amateurs are being sent out with as many search
teams as possible (NASA, FBI, etc). Amateur communications are working
better than all others. Some donated repeaters are being brought in to
supplement the existing machines, but they need some temporary tower
structures.
TODAY'S crew was about 14 hams. They are talking about needing 25 or
more
hams daily for the next two weeks.
HAMS in Houston and Dallas are using Echolink to talk to the command
center
in Nacogdoches to coordinate recruiting hams.
IF you don't have Echolink, you can download it for Windows at:
