[HCARC] CW Skills Delayed

After basic electricity/electronics school at Great Lakes Naval Training Center Feb. 1967, we were requested to change ratings from ET (electronics technician) to either RM (radioman) or RD (radarman). The Navy was short those ratings then. Several classmates opted for RD. We were all afraid of having to learn Morse Code at Bainbridge, MD. No RD's in submarines. RM would have been my choice. I regret not converting. In my first boat, I admired Radiomen and duties. Now I struggle with CW 50yrs later. Never too late. Perhaps.

Our Navy no longer teaches CW. Bad idea IMHO. KF5AIE _ . _

This happened in April of 2015. The military Morse training was
consolidated at Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo. I believe it is still
being taught there. The Navy taught it at Pensacola, the Army at Ft.
Devens, Mass and then at Ft. Huachuca and the AF at Keesler AFB, Miss
and then Goodfellow AFB. There were probably other locations at earlier
times.

I guess that perhaps some of the work is now done by automatic Morse
readers now, just like on the ham bands although many of the Morse
readers do a poor job with QRM, QRN, QSB and sloppy senders.

I learned Morse at Imperial Beach Calif, and was in one of the last classes
there, before it moved to Pensacola. I helped pack some of the gear after I
graduated, while awaiting orders to Monterey.

Brown, thanks for info on Imperial Beach. Most of the Navy guys I knew
were EW types so never got familiar with the various Navy training
bases. Several of my electronic techs went to a a joint school at Corry
Station, but that's about my only contact with Navy schools.

Good morning HCARC.

I learned Morse Code at Fort Ord, CA in the Radio Operator (05B) course.
I went on to the Radio Teletype Operator course to earn my primary MOS of 05C
at Fort Gordon, GA. This was back in 1966, O5B20 then became my secondary MOS.
Nineteen sixty seven and sixty nine found me in the 337th Radio Research
Company supporting the 1st Infantry Division in the "Iron Triangle" Tactical
Area of South Vietnam. Between those two tours I was stationed at Headquarters
Army Security Agency, Arlington Hall, VA, filling a 72B20, Communications
Center Specialist slot. After 3 yrs, 7 mos, I Was released from active duty on
3DEC69. I never got to operationally utilize my Morse skills of sending/receiving
15 five character code groups per minute, although I did Operate a lot of radio
and communication gear.

My Navy career began in 1977 and ran through 17 years when I retired with 20 yrs
active service in 1994. During that time I served as an Aviation Electronics
Technician. Thank you all for allowing me to share this personal info in this forum.
