When renewing you driver's license...   just take  your DD-214 with you.
I just showed my DD-214 in FBG.  She did not keep  it.
 
When you apply for your CHL...  You indicate VET on  the
form and send a copy of your DD-214 along.  OH you  $ave
a bunch of $$$...!!   ;-)    Been  there done that!!

Drivers' license and  concealed Handgun License. The new ID will
