What time of day and time of year was it when you made contact with N5HR
from Menard on 80 meters?
If it was Noon in summer, then I take back what I have been saying about HF
for emergancy communication.
I would suggest cutting antennas for the low end, abt 3600. That way, you
can use CW, PSK-31 and other digital modes, probably without a tuner. With
an Extra Class license, you can use SSB just above 3600. There's almost NO
QRM down there, even in the evenings. From casual listening, I find it wide
open compared with 75 Meters above 3800.
