[HCARC] Propagation

My bet is still on "Long Path".  It's amazing the distance that given the 
right ionospheric (how about that big word, radio fans??)  conditions your 
signal can go easily all the way around the earth.  Talking with Terry 
Hipskind a couple of weeks ago he had a QSO on PSK31 (still HF propagation) 
to Amsterdam Island (look for Amsterdam Island in the middle of the southern 
Indian Ocean halfway between Australia and Africa, approximately 1/2 the way 
around the earth) using the normal PSK31 wattage of around 20 watts. 
Comparatively 15-20 watts is not much signal to go so far and still be 
readable - granted it is a computer doing the hearing, but 12,500 miles is 
12,500 miles, regardless of how you cut it.

Your response makes me think I should rephrase my question. That would be, 
what conditions should I look for in the future when I have a qso with a 
station to the east of me, the east coast and/or Europe. It will be easier 
to make note of conditions at that time than trying to recreate the past. 
After all, in ham radio expect the unexpected. I know I will have similar 
qsos when I return to my northern qth.

Concerning my absence this morning. The XYL gets the car on Wednesday 
mornings so I am left to my motorcycle. Just wasn't up to suiting up for 
this morning's cool temperature so I had to breakfast alone (I know, I can 
hear one big sigh out there).

Jerry,

I wonder if the "giant reflector" behind you is not allowing you to maximize 
Ionospheric reflection? If the atmospheric conditions were just right? 
Another part of the puzzle would be to look at the weather and atmospheric 
conditions, both Chicago and received station, for each of the events.
