When I got my extra and my FCC 1st Radio Telephone, we had to  draw 
schematics on oscillators and RF amps. There were no question pools, they  could 
test you on just about anything. Was it better?  The jury is still  out on 
that one.

Yes, a  lot of people now get their Extra license without ever getting on

radio.  When there was a Morse code requirement and a 2 year  experience 
requirement it was more difficult to get on as an Extra without  having 
spent 
a lot of time on the radio.  Times change, but radio is  still fun.
