Let me define my terms (which may not be at all accurate):

Antenna Coupler - automatic tuner that resides at the antenna

Antenna Tuner - manual or automatic antenna tuner which is at the radio inside the shack.

I.E. the difference I can see is that the Antenna Coupler is at one end of the Coax and the tuner at the other.  Both are not there at the same time.  

I have read good things about antenna couplers and the impression I get is that is where the tuning really should take place.  If so and you were feeding your shack through a multiple antenna switch, I assume (that's dangerous) that the coupler would be in line AFTER the switch to allow it to be used for all of the antennas fed through that switch.
