I think you hit on it.  I was able to find a piece of the original mounting hardware, just a length of screw and measure it with the micrometer.  I've estimated it to be around 37 turns per inch as measured from my 0.29" length, and a #6 seems right right diameter.  I've never heard of a 6-40 before so that must be it.  Thanks James.
