Brian,

Downright cool. I was a new Novice in '62, but was counseled by my Elmers
to "Build it yourself; it's cheaper and if it doesn't work, you "get" to fix
it" A Footnote: - My old boss at Burstein-Applebee (BA) in KC was W0OSD sk
(old stinky drawers). When John was on Munda in the Solomons during WW-II,
they made a bamboo beam, painted in aluminum paint, 'cause in those days, it
had LOTS of aluminum in it. He said they mostly used it to listen to
stateside stuff, but once the island was totally secured, they used a BC-610
& BC-348 to "work home".. albiet somewhat illegally, as they'd communicate
with military stations only. He said it worked "swell" until a typhoon took
it off the top of the palm trees, and the last time they saw it, it was
making about 80 knots toward the Phillipines.

Tom - former RMC USN - WØEAJ
