This is an article written by Jim Smith, VK9NS-SK and sent to me by Bernie Nicholson, VK2ABN.
Jim wrote the article but never had a chance to publish it, so here it is. While I've spent considerable
time with HBR-16 Receivers and have put many hours into the website on same, I've always thoughtthe ULTIMATE homebrew SSB Transceiver was the LWM-3 presented in several issues of GE Ham Newsin the early 60's (maybe because Collins was a heavy QST advertizer ??). This was also a constructionarticle built by quite a few hams. Not nearly as many as the HBR series, largely due to the LWM-3'scomplexity of construction and debug difficulty .....and not being in QST (my opinion). I've been contacted by several builders who saw the LWM-3 pictures in the HBR-16 section, they havebeen on ebay, I've had one (and have a "partial"), and thought it would be great to make the article available.
Jim Smith, VK9NS-SK was an excellent builder, especially in light of the fact that he lived on a remote
island without ready access to parts. He completed the build in 2003 and you will be quite impressed. I think
it deserves it's own section on the website. Enjoy. It's the second section on the website http://www.qsl.net/k/k5bcq/ 73 Kees K5BCQ
