Scott:
Considering the comments you've made, I'd highly recommend the HBR-11.
Five fewer holes to punch if nothing else, hi. And being one of the last
iterations of Ted's receivers, it incorporates a lot of what he learned along
the way. BTW, the "C" in HBR-13C simply means a center mounted Eddystone
dial. There is no reason why you couldn't build an HBR-13 using another
dial configuration.
Give a lot of thought to the dial that you'll use. It's what you'll be
looking at whenever you operate the rig. The National dial is a great dial.
Keep in mind though that the HBR (any flavor) dial calibration in not
linear. So you won't be able to read the frequency directly from the PW dial.
You'll have to make up a dial calibration chart ala the HRO receivers
(which were not linear either). The National ICN, ACN, etc dials did allow
easy hand calibration, but the tuning rate is typically found to be too quick.
This can be solved by using the Jackson Brothers dual range drive (still
available new from Surplus Sales of Nebraska) behind the National drive,
but this does require some fabrication (I've got pictures of how to do this
if you decide to explore that option).
One caution on the thoughts of using a wooden case. The HF oscillator in
an HBR is very susceptible to proximity capacitance. Your hand, etc. close
to the left side of the wooden case will change the received frequency
quite dramatically.
