[HBR] HBR 8 vs 13C : )

When I built my HBR-14 last winter- - - I during testing I operated in semi
HBR-8 configuration with just two IFs and no RF stage and standard detector.
I found the receiver to be more that adequate for casual amateur use and I
was able to fine tune my coils including 160 meters and the IF gain was
adequate. Best thing to do is grab a soldering iron and start building,
leave room for more stages if necessary. I also recommend for new HBR
builders to build the power supply on a separate chassis. I have some video
available of the testing. More to be posted on my site soon.

Amount of work isn't a whole lot more (IMHO) from the 8 to the 13C. In my
experince I had the most trouble (I was about 14 years old at the time)
getting the 3 plug-in coils working and tracking right. This challenge
exists on either the 8 or the 13C. Having the AGC function taught me alot
about how an AGC functions on a real receiver.
All that said, the most important thing is have fun with this !

Greetings Paul
Thanks for the head's up on the chassis. I have an acquaintance
here in La Crosse that does these things, and am thinking of having
him build me at least two of them in case I make a mistake in cutting
holes et cetera. I have the cabinet it needs a good restoration, so
it limits my chassis size, but it should be big enough for the
project. I was kinda of thinking of going through the whole series
and learning everything I can from what these guys went through,
that's why I was thinking of starting with 8, but I can go through at
least SOME of their teachings VIA the text that has been preserved
for us : ) So after I hear from guys like you and read this series
over a time or two, then I might just might know which way why and
how to go about it... I know I could save a lot of time going
straight to the finished product, but am wondering if learning of the
whys and wherefores of the circuits changes were made and what
happened then is worth my efforts. I'm thinking at least for now of
studying the material and saving parts for awhile until I start
getting confident and learn what you guys have done.
Anyone else out there do the HBR 8 thru HBR XX ??? Would like
to know why you did or did not do the things you did or didn't
do : ) you may help me or others avoid a few pitfalls along the
way. OH, I did by the way start to go through the archives. I'm
saving the posts that help me in my directional foray. : )
Thanks everyone
Bill
