[HBR] Thoughts on the Jackson Drive

Hello fellow list members:

The Jackson Bros. dial cited incorporates the somewhat famous Jackson dual
6:1/36:1 ball drive (used in many commercial ham rigs of the 70's) and a
dial reminiscent of the old National dials originally used by Ted Crosby on
his HBR's. The drive itself (w/o the dial) is available, new, through
Surplus Sales of Nebraska.

This is the drive that I used on my HBR-16, though I combined it with the
National ICN lighted dial (replacing the National Velvet Vernier drive).
This is a great drive, though there is a lack of torque capability in the
36:1 range. This means that you need to make sure that your tuning cap is
perfectly square to the drive and is well lubricated. If you can accomplish
this, this Jackson drive is THE drive to use, in my opinion.

If anyone would like to see how I mounted the Jackson Drive in the National
ICN, drop me your email address and I'll send you some pictures.

As to the placement of the drive, Ted always used the left side, rather
than center, for mechanical rigidity, and thus better frequency stability.
The C in HBR-13C indicated center placement of the dial, but the HBR-13C was
not Ted's construction.
