Big Nick,

The Hallicrafters SX-100 and early SX-101's had a 1650 Kc 1st IF and
covered 160 Meters. As for the tuning capacitance being too small, the ratio of
Fmax to Fmin on 160 is less than on 80 meters.

Yes, you would have to watch the winding capacitance. How about using
powered iron toroids so that fewer turns are needed. I have been tempted to
try this with the HBR anyway. The Q would be at least as high as the air
wound coils -- around 200 or so. Hope Ted doesn't mind me suggesting that.
Another option may be to use universal wound coils that could be modified
by unwinding to the required inductance. Possible candidates would be old
IF transformers or BC coils.

Hello
all,

I found a comment
made by Ted Crosby in his HBR-13 QST feature:

"Often,
I’m queried about font-end coils for the broadcast and 160-meter
bands. Sorry, but these are
impracticable; the range of the tuning capacity too small for the required
frequency coverage at these relatively low frequencies. Also, in both
instances the
frequencies are too close to the receiver’s first i.f. for
trouble-free operation."

As suspected
:-(
