Welcome, Peter. Frank's site is a great resource.

In my testbench I need to apply a couple of volts
differentially to balance the plate currents. I don't know
if this is typical (I've only checked out one sample tube).

I think that adjusting the drive level to the deflectors is
a nice way of controlling gain. I don't think that there
is a strong dependency on bias (but this is just
speculation).
