[HBR] WTD APC 25

Bill (AA2YV) here again,

Apropos receivers, I just completed an almost total rebuild of the Hallicrafters S40A receiver. I didn't want to take off the tube sockets, but I took everything else off (except for a few key resistors) and cleaned the chassis with Simichrome Polish (by Happich), a German product. Got it from Radio Daze on line. So, I replaced all the paper and wax caps with the usual orange drop caps, and, whoosh, it fired right up the first time. Will leave the slightly spotty front panel as is but want to repaint the enclosure with a Krylon dark color. I checked out the assortment of Hallicrafters of that era found at the AWA museum collection; turns out that the colors are not uniform. The voltages are fine, but the power transformer runs a bit too warm for my blood. Probably underrated.
Now, maybe I can get the right size chassis for my planned HBR16 and then someone with the tools to cut the holes. Could be this summer's job.

ciao

Thanks Tom, Bill, Jim and others.
Yes I have been watching eBay, as a matter of fact I got a dozen 100 pf
caps, brass plates no less, from there.
The sawing idea is something that I had overlooked. I will give that a try.
I know pulling plates is not the answer for brass.
Also found a supplier of new caps at $6 a smack. ouch!
