The solution is to use the variable capacitors with buil-in dial drives from 
WW2 surplus gear, which are high quality and relatively inexpensive.

For example, the 40 meter ARC-5 receiver, (BC-455 et al) has a 3 gang, 62 pf 
per section capacitor and built-in gear drive. The LM and BC-221 frequency 
meters and the ARC-5 transmitters have good caps too.

While ARC-5s in good shape command high prices (pun intended), junkers and 
heavily modified units often go for a song.

As for projects of my own...

The current project is to get the shack/shop into neat-enough condition that 
I can actually build something. To that end, if someone has need of some 
specific parts for a project, please let me know and I'll see what I have.
