Hi Jay,
 
Applying heat with a soldering iron has worked for me in remelting the
grease. Automotive chassis grease works fine for relubrication (wheel
bearing grease is too thick). Some really good lube is the stuff they use
on camshafts/lifters during engine rebuilding.
