[HBR] HBR 16 Owner Pondering Building My Own

Well, I just had to get in on this since I pondered just the same question last year. What to build.

The method to my madness is just what has been suggested and I made it easy (or easier as the case may be) to perform the upgrades as I see fit. I started with what resembles an 8 tube version. I used old command set parts and infact some of them are from Don Merz's stock. What is kinda unique with mine is the upgradability. I used the cabinet, front panel, and chassis from an old HP noise meter found at Dayton in the test equipment junk pile for $3. The vernieer is first rate, the panel is laid out with controls, a beautiful large meter that I used for the S-meter, and the chassis and cabinet are made to order. What I did with the chassis is what makes it great to work with. I cut out the insides of the chassis and made "drop-in" sub chassis for major blocks of the receiver. This way when it comes time to upgrade or add a "block" to get closer to the HBR-16 I can do so. It also allows me to have a receiver that I can listen to as I build a new or improved "block". Neat, eh?? So far my HBR is just that. MY HBR in that it follows some of the HBR concept but what I presently have is a dual conversion "command set". Works good and now I have a basis for comparison as I add improved circuits, additional stages, etc. and as I said before depending on what I am doing I might also be "using it" as I am upgrading it.
