[HBR] Checking In -- And A Recommendation

I think I have an original of the G2DAF receiver articles. It's a more of a
booklet or a magazine than a book but it is dedicated to that receiver. If
someone is interested I could probably scan it and put it on line.
I'm preparing for a mission trip to Vietnam right now but if those
interested aren't in a great rush, I should have time to mess with it when I
return.

Didn't one of our members have a copy of that book with a G2DAF receiver
derivative he was selling ? I contacted RSGB for a copy some time ago and
was told there were none, period. Maybe we could reprint it and offer it
? or at least copy it an offer it at cost. I sure wouldn't mind having a
copy of that one and volunteer to do the work.

Those of us who are still working probably think retirement brings a
chance for much more radio ... Be forewarned -- it can instead be
just a new job you can do from home but for which you don't get
paid. In my case, retirement has been stolen by animal rights
fanatics and the sometimes well-meaning naive folks who support
them ... people who seriously want to make it impossible to breed
or even own pets or any other sort of animal. Sharyn and I are up
to here in the nationwide fight to see that our kids and their kids
will still be able to own dogs and cats, hunt, fish, and the rest.
She just relayed from a friend that there are AR bills pending in 32
state legislatures at the moment. You thought HSUS was
'respectable' and PETA 'cute'? Naw ... they got my retirement and
I'm *not* happy about it.
In spare moments I still think about radio projects -- maybe next
winter when the outdoor work slows down?
The recommendation -- at least to anyone who expects to do more
than build an existing design -- is to find yourself a copy of G. R. B.
Thornley (G2DAF)'s 'Communication Receivers.' This is *head and
shoulders* above anything else I've read on the subject of ham
receiver design and construction practice. The material was
printed first as a series of seven articles in the R.S.G.B. Bulletin,
July-November 1960 and March-April 1961. It was reprinted by the
R.S.G.B. as one of their publications at a later date.
Simply an amazingly knowledgible guy and an amazing writer.
Clear, detailed, specific ... you won't be disappointed!
