[HBR] Fw: Building a HB-65.... (sort of)

I wanted to make a couple of further comments. First, that I actually
*do* know how to spell toroid and I am now going to teach my
spelling checker.

Second, I think that Hugo's HB-65 project (with a pentode replacing
the 7360) makes an excellent 'first serious receiver' project. That
design should be stable enough and have the dynamic range and
selectivity needed to be perfectly usable on 80 and 40 meters; with a
good crystal controlled converter fronting it (as in the HB- 65
handbook article), the sky's the limit -- certainly it would go to 10
meters.

At the same time, it's free of critical circuits except for the usual
issues with a VFO -- in other words, about as free of such circuits as
is practical. Using double conversion with a couple of 100 kcs
transformers for selectivity rather than a mechanical filter as in the
HB-67, it's easier to get avoid leakage problems and the higher first
IF (compared to 455 kcs in the HB-67) is an advantage. With the
gain and selectivity distributed as they are, the problems of a beam
tube gone, and a fairly low parts count, this design ought to find a
place in many 'homebrew station' setups.

We'll be watching for pictures and further reports, Hugo!
