[HBR] dial assbly

Very interesting discussion in the last few days has prompted
me to add my 2 cents (CDn) worth.
Considering the scarcity of the origional capacitor, is it not
possible to use a two section capacitor for the pre-select and
another single section for the osc? This would certainly make
front end alignment easier.
This would also allow a little more flexability with dial
placement and would eliminate the need for the "elevated" sub
chassis, while making for a lower profile receiver overall. It
would, however, require a re-arrangement of the major
components. This may not be in the true spirit of the HBR, but
with the difficulty of procuring origional parts it may be
necessary.
One idea would be to use the drive assbly from a ARC5 unit with
the origonal capacitor removed and a cap of choice reinstalled.
This is something I would not do with a good cap. I am not that
sadistic! Usually there are units around which have been
mutilated anyway so this would be a new lease on life.
>From this point it is quite easy to build a slide rule dial.
See the radio handbook Seventeenth edition, page 624 for
details. I used this system on my HB tx. Kees has pictures of
it on the HBR site.
I like the HRO dial idea. I think it has lot of merit. It
should be possible to give the HBR a HRO 50 look with a little
work.
As for calibrating it for 1 Khz / div, well in my case anyway,
life is too short for that.
Of course, all this could be easily solved with some one
finding a warehouse full of Eddystone dials and making them
available for say, 15 or 20 dollars each. There I go dreaming
again!
