I was going to suggest a radiused dial
but more of a slot. Either cut in the front panel or in a
smaller panel that stands off from the front and has your
reduction drive mounted. A fairly thin slit and put your
scale on a card that you drop between the two panels
when you swap coils.
Say, a 3/8 wide slot on 3" radius. You could backlight as well.
Now if you want string, one can do a lot with string :-)
