The Eddystone 598 is a nice 180 degree arc dial, I have one on a
HBR-11. It's much smaller than the National ACN/ICN dials and
about the same size as a National SCN. Best part; it has a smooth,
10:1 tuning rate, Jackson Bros ball vernier drive. This has a "better"
feel than the "standard", 6.5:1 tuning rate, Jackson Bros ball vernier
drive. The size of the dial is compatible with the HBR-11/12 size
receivers where the Eddystone 898 or the ACN/ICN dials would be
too large.

As an aside....I wouldn't be surprised if the 598 dials are actually
more difficult to locate than the 898 Eddystones because the 898
was THE dial if you could afford it. National dials were OK-good,
inexpensive, and readily available.

A slower tuning ratio is desirable when using the "standard"
Jackson Bros drives and that's why two stacked ball verniers
with, a 42:1 tuning rate (21 turns stop to stop), are better yet,
but they must be mounted solidly.

The drawback of all 180 degree arc dials (in my opinion) is that
there is limited space to indicate frequencies on the inner arcs.
A "sliderule" dial circumvents this problem.

"Human factors" and "ease of use" are very important in receivers ....
....that's what you are looking at and tuning for hours on end. Digital
dials are really easy to use but "don't look right" on tube type
receivers (my opinion).

Got off on a tangent ...what was your question ?

Hello Kees-
What do you think about the Eddystone 598? I have never used one
before.
