Thanks, Jim.

I wouldn't want to use just the rain gutter -- I was thinking about
using that for one leg of the loop and attaching the wire to each end of
the run to complete the full wave loop. However, I abandoned that idea
pretty quickly. I'll string the wire under the eave and out to the
trees so about 2/3 to 3/4 will be in the clear, the rest will just have
to work as well as it can in proximity to the gutter. I have the wire
measured, cut & painted a "stealthy" mottled gray, so when the weather
improves and I can get my big ladder back I'll try to get it up and see
how it works.

On the bright side, I think I can get away with using a balun and
letting the TS-850's internal tuner do the matching. The feed line will
be about 5-6 feet of 300 Ohm twin lead, or I think I have some 450
window line I could use.

I am unenthusiastic about using a rain gutter as long as you can put something up in the air. I don't believe a metal roof in close proximity to the loop would be very good. Dick Newsome and I put up a long wire under the eaves for WN0CKX (10 - 80 meters), and his antenna works just fine. I have a 160 meter loop out at a friend's farm: best antenna I've ever had. Dick Newsome has a similar antenna and it works superbly, even under present conditions.
