[HBQRP] Linux Software for HAMs

When I relocated my shack, I built a new computer for it. It's running
Linux (Fedora 11 at the moment). I've played with some of the available
Linux software. Some of it is just horrid, some not too bad.
Unfortunately one of the buggy bits is the rig control app that pretty
much everyone uses; it doesn't want to talk to my TS-850. Other rigs
would be fine; if I tell it my rig is a different Kenwood rig some
functions work great. There is some good digimode software out there,
as well as rig control (if you don't use a TS-850), satellite tracking,
calculating grid locations and coordinates, etc.

The biggest problem you may face is dealing with the sound card.
Unfortunately, there are a number of sound card control libraries and
applications available for Linux, so you end up with layers of sound
control panels and apps. Trying to narrow it down to one will generally
not work. Too many apps require either one or the other, and demand
their favorite flavor. You're going to end up with *at least*
PulseAudio and ALSA installed. Once you sort things out, though, even
the sound card apps generally behave well.

I don't think there is a single contest logging app out there to compete
with the WinEQF/N1MM/Writelogs of the world, though. At least I didn't
find any when I was testing the MK-1 with various software.
