[HBQRP] Hustler Vert.

I have alway found the Hustler's stronger than my old Butternut. I think in
the protection of the city, the Hustler would take most any wind you would
see without being guyed. Except of course for tornados.

Dale... don't you live in the city? Is this vertical in the middle of your
yard or is it next to the house? Personally, I'd stick the thing as far
away from houses, power lines, etc as I could. I would put out about 64
radials. Either mow the grass short, lay the radials on top of the mowed
grass, and pin the ends down into the ground with something like stiff wire
from coat hangers. I'd connect the radial to a circular plate and then
connect that plate to the antenna ground. This makes it easier to connect
the radials rather then having to bunch the connections up. IF this is a
ground mounted vertical, the radial become non-resonant. Make them as long
as practical considering you property up to about 1.5 wavelengths. Studies
have shown that longer radials do have an effect of reducing the near field
ground losses. Further out you don't have control of.

If this vertical is elevated, let me know - that is a different story.

Actually, I think that you will enjoy the antenna and it will be quite
reliable for you. Oh yeah, some will argue that traps are not good etc, but
I don't feel that any loss in a well designed trap is much to worry about.
The surronding objects cause more problems. Again, wind... I think that you
will find the antenna can take it. The base? Personally, I'd use a post
hole digger, sick a few inches of heavy gravel in to bottom, still the pole
in, and fill the rest with concrete. (stops leaning problems)

Enjoy...es 72,
