Dale and Steve...
I agree with both of you. It's great to be recognized. It's great they
mentioned the BPL problem. The reported did give us the last word. It
would make a great sound bite: "We are the unwanted stepchild. But when the
s- hits the fan, who are you going to call?"
In my opinion it really shows how much work Ham Radio needs to do in the
public awareness and public relations department.
Ham Radio hasn't changed a lot since WWII. We use SSB instead of CW on HF.
We use FM on VHF/UHF. A few people play with digital modes, but in reality
there is almost as much CW activity (WWII) as there is
Packet/Amtor/PSK-??/WinLink2000/whatever. A few play with Satellites but
again not much activity.
As always... "when the s- hits the fan," the exotic modes and infrastructure
usually fall by the wayside. The simple modes people are familiar with day
to day are the ones that WORK and get used.
The K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid) method at work. Homeland Security and
FEMA should take notes.

It's a thankless job, but I've got a lot of karma to burn off.
