Well I had some time yesterday afternoon so I decided to get started on the SW 30 kit I picked up last Saturday at the meeting.
All parts were accounted for, sorted, labeled and stuck in a piece of foam with the exception of the IC's. I was aware of the electro static problem Darrel mentioned previously so they are stored in the anti-static bag they came in.

I placed the pc board in one of my old wooden style circuit board holders and went to work following the instructions of the Elmer 101 book, page 3. After installing D13, C112, C102 and U2 I applied power and the smoke stayed inside the components. As Martha Stewart would say "That's a good thing". Ha!

The power supply I am using is an old Kenwood PS5, 13.8vdc, 3.5 amp supply. I used aligator clip jumper leads to connect power to the 2 pieces of hook up wire I soldered to the J4 connections on the board. Using my DMM, I get a reading of 13.55 vdc across the terminals of this power supply.

Here are my results which are satisfactory according to the book:

J4 pin 2 13.53 vdc
Cathode of D13 13.53 vdc
D13 dropping voltage 12.91 for a drop of .62 vdc
J2 pin 1 of the U2 voltage regulator 7.93 vdc

Looks good to me ! Now if I could just figure out how to read the schematic and trace the circuit on the board following the current flow.........

Anyway..........should we press on with the VFO next or wait until everyone completes the power supply ??? I'm in no hurry as I want to learn how this really works.

Comments or suggestions ????
