Hi Elan,
Working satellites can be as easy as a HT with a handheld beam antenna
pointed up at the satellite, or it can be big antenna arrays to work the
harder farer out satellites. It all depends on how much you are willing to
do to work satellites. Alot of people will start out slow trying to access
the FM birds using there FM rigs they already have with a omni vertical,
then move up from there.
As for radio I currently have a Yaesu FT-847, and a Kenwood TS-790 for
satellite use. The 790 has always been a great rig for satellites, but it's
a triband rig, it covers 2m, 70cm, and 1.2 gig all mode. So, I decided to
purchase the 847 to cover HF, and other bands. It also works great for
satellite. The 847 comes right out of the box ready for 9600 bps for working
the 9600 digital satellites. The 790 is a older rig, and I had to make a
simple mod to it for 9600 bps. I can't help too much with the TS2000 as I
don't own one. But I have heard that it doesn't support pl tones in sat
mode, which makes it a bit harder to access pl birds. You must setup the
TS2000 in a split mode to get the pl to work. The 736 is a great satellite
rig also but like the 790 it is a older rig. I hope I helped a bit in the
are of sat radios.
As for AO-40, it is currently not working. Ground controllers are currently
trying to recover the bird, but you never know.
