I am wondering if your "snapping and popping" MIGHT be coming from the opposite of a short: i.e. continuity is being broken when it should be there.For instance that a connection to ground is periodically being opened by a high resistance connection appearing, or a zero ohms connection failing due to, perhaps, too much lubricant existing where there should be none.Or perhaps a series cap somewhere in the circuit is bad.
