[Hammarlund] HQ-170A oscillator alignment

Hello -

Looking for some advice - I have a HQ-170A that has had the Golden
screwdriver treatment on the Oscillator coils by a former owner, and I'm
trying to get the dial to track properly.

Wondering if there is any trick to getting the linearity set right.  I
have the proper tools and equipment, but I simply can't get the dial to
track throughout the full band spread.  I'm presently working on the 40
meter band.  Every time I adjust the coil, it throws off the tracking.
Adjusting the capacitor at the top of the band sort of brings it back,
but then disrupts the run below 7.2 MHz.  This is getting extremely
frustrating...

I'm considering just running the coil and the capacitor out to their
minimum ranges and start doing quarter turns on each -- which is how I
have had to do some Hallicrafters SR series coils when they've been
butchered.

Is there any trick though that would reduce the knob twisting that
anyone can share?

thanks

Jeff
